DIY Birthday "Faux" Chalkboard

This is the 2nd time I'm posting this b/c Blogger let me publish and then it disappeared. AUGH.
These types of "stat" boards have been appearing all over Pinterest and Etsy so of course I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and have one for Sebastian's birthday. But do you think I'm going to pay $20+ JUST FOR THE FILE?! Hell to the no. I'm cheap.

So I made one myself, of course.

Here's how I did it.

Materials:
  • black foamboard (I got mine at Joann's with a 50% off coupon for a whopping $2)
  • gel/metallic markers/colored pencils/crayons (I used Crayolas because I'm a crayon brand snob)
  • a dull pencil
  • tape
  • a computer with Powerpoint or Word or Photoshop
  • printer
  • tape
  • scissors or paper trimmer
First I went on DaFont and downloaded a bunch of cutesy chalkboard fonts. Then I opened up Powerpoint and created a slide the same size as my foamboard (20 in X 30 in) and designed what I wanted the board to look like:

But, I don't have a fancy schmancy printer that prints 20 in x 30 in (if I did, there really wouldn't be a point to this post) so I went on Google and searched "how to print large picture on multiple sheets) and found this site: Block Posters. It allows you to upload your file and print it as big as you'd like. So I uploaded my slide (which I saved as a JPEG) and selected for it to print on TWO LANDSCAPE LETTER sized sheets across. I put that in caps because I am embarrassed to admit how many sheets of paper I fucked up with the wrong sizing.

Ok, so it printed on 8 sheets. I laid them out on my foamboard:

See that gap where the margins are? Yeah, not gonna work for me. I'm anal retentive. So I pulled out my paper trimmer and got rid of the access.

Does it look SO much better? Humor me, people.

I taped all the sheets of paper together then put a small piece of tape at the top to keep it from moving on the foamboard.

Then I did something that did not work but I'm going to tell you anyway. I rubbed chalk on the back of the paper thinking that when I traced, it would transfer over onto the foamboard. It did not, so don't even bother. It'll just get chalk on your board for no reason.

I began to trace the letters, pressing firmly. This will leave an imprint on your board.

Here's my tip. DO NOT TRACE THE WHOLE PIECE IN ONE SHOT. You'll make more mistakes and it'll be a bigger pain in the ass to fix. Trace a small part, then lift the paper, and retrace with your gel/metallic markers/colored pencils/crayons.

Add your own flair to the lettering!

Here's the finished product:

(I'll add his height & weight after our 12 month well visit next month)

This wasn't my favorite project to work on, but it was easy, cheap, & it came out cute!

11 Months

Sebastian turned 11 months today. My heart hurts a little thinking about how my baby really isn't a baby any more. He's quickly leaning towards a rambunctious toddler and I don't think I like it. One month away from being a 1 year old. Wow.

Here are some new things we are doing:
  • Pulling to stand very quickly
  • Walking with walker
  • Screaming "NAO!" (no in Portuguese)
  • Signing "eat"
  • Climbing anything he can find. Including the dog.

Pinspiration Tuesday! Yes, I know it was yesterday...

Blazer - Loft, Top - Loft, Pants - Target, Shoes - Nine West

Pinspired by:

Yesterday was an insane day of driving to and from Baltimore. I spent the hours of 9am - 6pm sitting down. My ass hurt a lot.

I do have magenta pants and I laid them out the night before all ready for my Pinspired outfit, only to put them on in the morning and see that they don't fit right anymore. My body is all wonky after having Sebastian and I need to take a lot of things to the tailor to hopefully salvage. How does an ass shrink but a ribcage grow? I don't get it.

Why You Shouldn't Cut Your Hair After Baby

Hey folks. Wanna know why I haven't posted in awhile? B/c I've been in hiding.

Remember my long locks?

Well, 2 weeks ago in a moment of despair while trying to glue down the baby hair halo, I decided I was going to get it cut. I went on Pinterest and pinned all these awesome hair cuts. See?

They are super cute, right? So I go to my stylist and show her these pictures and tell her: "I need to be able to wear it curly. I need to be able to put it in a ponytail. I don't want a "mom" cut. I want something fun and modern." She said "Got it!"

SHE LIED.

When I tell you that I paid for the horrendous cut and ran out of there like my ass was on fire, I am not kidding you. I knew I was going to start bawling and I couldn't bring myself to doing it there because then she'd want to fix it. And I didn't want her to come near me or my hair EVER AGAIN.

Wanna see the damage? I'm warning you. It ain't pretty.

Why is that scribbly heart over my face? Oh, because I had been crying like someone told me unicorns don't really exist for TWO HOURS. I may or may not have scared Serg and Sebastian with the tears. I may or may not have sobbed "I CUT OFF THE LAST FUN PART OF ME!"

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT? WHAT. THE. FUCK. IS. THAT.

The next morning I woke up puffy eyed and was desperate for a solution. I tried the curling wand.

Ok, not terrible. A definite improvement. So I wore my hair like this for 2 days and burned most of my fingerprints off in the process.

Then I had to wash my hair and blow dry it myself.
Well. Now I look like I'm wearing a hair lampshade. Shall we say, "what the fuck is that", again?

Obviously, I can not wear this pyramid hair curly. AUGH. Panic starts to set in and I decide that I need to go back to my old stylist who is 40 minutes away. HE CAN SAVE ME.

And he did. For $75. His first words as he examined my butchered head: "What the fuck, Renata! Did you go to Super Cuts?!"

Still not what I originally wanted but 390482095840 times better. He told me he "did what he could around the massacre". Seriously.

Plus side? For the first time ever I think I really love my hair curly more than straight!

Lesson learned. Never cutting my hair again.

Pinspiration Tuesday - Chambray & Animal Print

Shirt - Old Navy, Skirt - H&M, Scarf - Target, Boots - Nine West

Pinspiration:

It's really hard to wear fun shoes when it's 20 degrees out and there's still a ton of snow and ice on the ground. And we're gearing up for more snow this week! I'm not a huge fan of how my flat boots look with work pants so I'll be in skirts & dresses until this weather gets better. Which will be soon - HOPEFULLY.

10 Month Must Haves

#1 - Munchkin Click Lock Flip Straw Cup - Once Sebastian got the hang of using a straw with the First Years cup, I switched him into these Munchkin ones because they don't leak and the straw flips in.

#2 - Philips Avent VIA Breast Milk Storage - I used these containers when I was pumping and now I use them all the time to carry snacks & food for Sebastian. They don't leak, stack into each other, & the lids lock together.

#3 - H&M Jersey Leggings - Now that Sebastian is very mobile & squirmy, he's been shimmy-ing out of his pants sometimes! I love these H&M jersey leggings because they stay put and his chubby little legs look so delicious in them, lol. And they're 3 for $12!

#4 - Neat Solutions Neat-Ware Table Topper - The easiest way to keep Sebastian entertained and quiet while we eat out is to give something to eat too. Lots of times, I'll order some slices of avocado, bananas, or even wheat toast for him to munch on. I use these table toppers to cover the surface so he can feed himself.

#5 - See Kai Run Adam Hi Tops - Sebastian is constantly pulling to stand and I think he'll be coasting soon so I wanted him to start to get used to the idea of wearing shoes. I wanted him to have some ankle support and See Kai Run shoes are known for being good for little feet. I got these on super 65% off sale... and 2 other pairs as well ;)

#6 - Melissa & Doug First Bead Maze - This awesome toy was a gift from a friend. The suction really works and it can be personalized!

Oh and she's adorable (she models all of her pieces).
