Better Late Than Never? Sebastian's IKEA Play Kitchen Hack

Yes, this blog post is about 9 months too late. But instead of looking at it that way, let's think of it as early planning for Christmas 2015?

Last fall, I decided that I wanted to get Sebastian a play kitchen for Christmas. I didn't want a giant piece of plastic and I also didn't want to spend a million dollars on a wooden one from Pottery Barn. Lucky for me, my mom found this wooden IKEA one in the AS-IS section for $40 and I told her to snatch it up.
It's not a fancy kitchen but it's the perfect size and base for a transformation. Who doesn't love a DIY project?! As soon as I had it, I went off to Pinterest for some inspiration.

Some of these kitchens are fancier than my real one!

Once I got an idea of what I wanted, I got down to business. First I took the kitchen apart and sanded everything down. The wooden pieces are covered in a clear lacquer and I wanted to paint it a bright white. I primed everything when I was done.

I chose a dark navy blue for the countertop and cubby holes. I purchased a small sample of it from Home Depot and it was more than enough. I used a small foam roller so the paint was evenly spread.

Once the blue was dry, I painted the rest of the kitchen with left over high gloss molding paint we had in the basement. The doors were spray painted with a matte metallic paint to give them a stainless steel look. I also changed the handles to these from IKEA: Varnhem Handle (6 inch)

To give the stove & microwave a more "real" feel, I added vinyl buttons and some knobs. I just used a silver sharpie to draw little dots on the stove knobs. The knobs are actually coat hooks from IKEA: Enudden Knob.

Sebastian's favorite part: press on lights in the microwave & oven. They are battery operated and stick on with adhesive.

My favorite part is the backsplash. I purchased a PVC decorative backsplash panel from Home Depot (Fasade in Brushed Aluminum) and attached it with some screws and glue.

And there you have it... Sebastian's hacked IKEA play kitchen!

Boho Chic - Tie Dye Maxi

Maxi Dress - Ocean Drive (no longer available but I linked a few options below)
Sunglasses - vintage Playboy style #4544 (found here on Etsy)

I participate (when I remember) in Wednesday Style Challenges with some girlfriends and this week's was "boho". I'm not really a boho-y type so I wasn't planning on joining in until I remembered I have this tie dye maxi dress I purchased when Loehmann's was closing. Such a great store - what a bummer! Since it's no longer available, here are some other options:

Brittany Tie Dye Maxi Dress (found here on Alloy)

NEUW Montego Tie Dye Maxi (found here at Urban Outfitters)

Free People 'Shadow' Tie Dye Silk Dress (found here at Nordstrom)

Swing Dress - Summer Uniform

The sun was in my face, lol.
Sunglasses - Target Aviators

Sometimes it's too hot to think about what to wear. That's why I own this dress in 3 different colors. Just make sure not to stick it in the dryer like I accidentally did with this one! I'm so sad it shrunk.

Styled a little bit differently here:

Since cutting my hair, I've had a difficult time getting the front to curl nicely. I really don't have the patience to sit in front of the mirror with a curling wand when it's 100 degrees outside. I attempted a modified version of this double dutch crown braid tutorial:

Not too shabby and done in less than 5 minutes!

What are your go to summer hairstyles?

I'm just going to jump back in.

Top - Free People Long Beach Tank (purchased at Nordstrom)

I can't express enough how thrilled I am that soft pants are in right now. It's basically like wearing pajamas but calling it "dressed". I was even more thrilled that the XXL in the girls' version at Old Navy fit me so I didn't have to figure out how I would get them hemmed with the elastic around the ankles. WIN.

I'm also loving this Long Beach Tank from Free People this summer. It's light weight, loose in the right places, & can be dressed up or down with the right accessories. I own it in three colors - black, white, & dark olive. I'm still on a quest for the perfect racerback bra though. Any recs?

My Hair IS FIXED!

Can I get an HALLELUJAH?!

For those of you who didn't follow my hair trauma in February, you can read about it here. Despite getting that horrendous hair cut fixed, I still wasn't happy with it. I let that unhappiness stew for a couple of months while my hair grew out a little. I pretty much stopped straightening it and wore it up all the time.

Last week, I decided to make an appointment with my friend Shannon's stylist. I had the balls to do it was because Shannon's hair cut is awesome and because I really hated my hair the way it was.

Well, I could have mouth-kissed Kathy at Rebellations in Hoboken because she cut it EXACTLY the way I wanted! She really listened and took her time making sure it looked great. I left the salon feeling like a brand new person... and Kathy got a new client.

It's amazing what liking (or disliking) your hair can do to your mood & self esteem!
